Students of the Month for September

Senior Grace Schlumbohm is active in musical, FCA, choir, and is the junior-senior choir rep officer. She is a 10-year member of 4-H, the 2018 Poultry Queen, the 2018 Jr. Fair Queen for Hancock County, and a 4-year member of the junior fair board. Her favorite classes are Spanish and ceramics, and she is looking forward to having a great senior year with lots of memories. Her personal goal is to glorify God in everything she does. Grace is the daughter of Tadd and Jenn Schlumbohm.


Junior Holly Heck enjoys dance, Refuge youth group, working at NOW, and volunteering at church services. She is involved in cheerleading, Hancock Youth Leadership, the All A Honor Roll, Spanish Club, National Honor Society, and is the student council secretary. Her favorite classes are English and History. She is looking forward to her senior year and then heading off to college. Her personal goals are to graduate from high school with a 4.0 and get into the college of her choice. Holly is the daughter of Bruce and Christine Heck.


Sophomore Matthew Berger is active in football, wrestling, track, Z-Club, yearbook, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His favorite classes are science and math, and he enjoys St. Michael’s Refuge youth group, hanging out with friends, and watching movies. He is looking forward to enjoying his years at LB, and his personal goal is to be the best person he can be. Matthew is the son of Jason and Judy Berger.


Freshman Izzy Granger is looking forward to playing in tournaments with the volleyball team, and her favorite subjects are math and science. She is active in volleyball, basketball, track, and choir, and she enjoys hanging out with her friends. Her personal goal is to maintain a positive attitude. Izzy is the daughter of the A.J. and Heather Granger.

We welcome Mr. Taylor Pothast to Liberty-Benton High School this Fall. He is currently in his fourth year of teaching, and he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo. Mr. Taylor Pothast has joined our high school social studies department, and he is teaching psychology, sociology, world affairs, and some freshmen and sophomore history.

Mr. Pothast is from Ottawa-Glandorf and is married to his wife, Ashley. They have a son, Westin, who is two, and their second child is due in November. His interests include basketball, cows, and golf.
He enjoys the relationships that are built with students, and he sees this as important and unique as a teacher. He is looking forward to seeing how his students succeed in life as young adults.

Monarch Butterflies Raised in Environmental Science Class

The Liberty-Benton Biology and Environmental Science classes have been working with the Toledo Zoo to take care of Monarch Butterflies. Today, our students marked and released two of the butterflies that will make the journey to Mexico. In total the students helped raise 6 butterfly’s. Their duties included finding food, cleaning the cages, planting more milk week, marking the butterflies, and releasing the butterflies.

Mrs. Amy Teders is currently in her 11th year of teaching at Liberty-Benton and her 16th year overall. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary English Education from Bowling Green State University, a Master’s Degree in Education from Heidelberg, and a Master’s Degree in English from Ohio University.

Mrs. Teders is from Bowling Green, Ohio, and she has been married to her husband, Randy, for 15 years. They have twins, Luke and Isaac, in 7th grade at LB, and Madi, in 3rd grade at LB.

Mrs. Teders enjoys interacting with and getting to know her students. She also enjoys intertwining technology with teaching English.

She is looking forward to finishing her master’s degree this summer and enjoying summer vacation. She enjoys reading, shopping, being outdoors, and spending time with her family.

Mr. Brandon Cupples is in his 16th year of teaching math at Liberty-Benton High School. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Mathematics Education and his Master’s Degree in Education from Bluffton University.
Mr. Cupples grew up in Mount Cory, and he and his wife, Carmen, have been married for twelve years and live on a small farm outside of Pandora. They live on a century farm where his grandparents and great-great grandparents once lived. They have four kids: Teaghan (8), Channing (7), Braelynn (5), and Kynnslee (3).

Mr. Cupples enjoys watching his students work hard to achieve things. When a student is struggling with a concept and continues to work hard until he or she masters the concept, it is not only gratifying to the student, but also to the teacher as well.

Mr. Cupples has a brother that lives in Dubai and another brother that lives in North Carolina. They both come home once a year in the summer, and Mr. Cupples is looking forward to seeing them and their families this summer.
Mr. Cupples loves being physically active. He enjoys playing ultimate Frisbee and basketball with friends, taking bike rides and playing soccer with his family, hiking, and cutting wood for their wood burner. He also enjoys reading to his daughters before bedtime at night.

Senior Sydney Plesec is active in volleyball, National Honor Society, and is a STRIDES leader. She enjoys volunteering at Gateway Church and Pheasants Forever. Her favorite classes are public speaking and government, and she is looking forward to graduating and going to college. Her personal goals are to graduate from college and get a job. Sydney is the daughter of Mark and Kim Plesec.



Junior Maya Trautman enjoys singing, writing, and watching movies and musicals, and her favorite subject is history. She sings in our school choir and loves participating in musicals. She is looking forward to attending college, and her personal goal is to become a high school history teacher. Maya is the daughter of Kerry and Todd Trautman.



Sophomore Michael Kotey is active in golf, basketball, track, Z-Club, and Habitudes, and he is looking forward to working at Findlay Country Club this summer and pole vaulting. He enjoys Refuge, the St. Michael’s Parish youth group, and volunteering as an altar server at St. Michael’s. His favorite classes are algebra and biology, and his personal goals are to excel in high school, study engineering, and pole vault in college. Michael is the son of Jan and John Kotey.


Freshman Chloe Kern is active in FCA, Z-Club, junior leadership 4-H, Spanish Club, and volleyball, and her favorite classes are history and Spanish. She enjoys working part-time at Jeffrey’s Antiques and shopping for antiques. She is looking forward to meeting tons of new people and going to college. Her personal goals are to make her parents proud and do a good job in school. Chloe is the daughter John and Melissa Kern.
