Liberty-Benton High School Students for the Month of March

IMG_2248Senior Keith Bouts enjoys playing soccer, biking, hiking, traveling, and completing community service. He is active in National Honor Society, soccer, and student council. Keith’s favorite subject is math. He is looking forward to going to college, and his personal goal is to graduate from college in electrical engineering. Keith is the son of Bruce and Debbie Bouts.

 

IMG_2247Junior Machenzie VanDenEynde is active in basketball, softball, choir, and Habitudes leadership class. She loves baking, and most importantly, hanging out with her family. Her family is most important to her. Her favorite classes are reading survey and world mythology, and she loves reading. She is looking forward to growing as a person and in her faith. Her personal goal is to always be the best she can be. Machenzie is the daughter of Mike and Angie VanDenEynde.

Jordan Clagg enjoys watching movies, doing volunteer work, speaking Spanish, listening to music, driving, and spending time with her friends, family, and dog. She is active in Spanish Club, Z-Club, Marching band, pep band, concert band, quiz bowl, and varsity softball. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA and takes college level classes. Her favorite subjects are Spanish and History. She is looking forward to going to Quiz Bowl Nationals and being vice president of Z-Club next year. Her personal goal is to graduate from the college of her choice. Jordan is the daughter of Stacy Clagg and Lisa Heimrick.

IMG_2254Kaelyn Payment is active in Z-Club and Spanish Club. Her favorite class is English. She enjoys playing piano, volunteering at the library and the Humane Society, reading and writing. She is looking forward to the summer, and her personal goal is to have a positive school experience that will prepare her well for her future. Kaelyn is the daughter of Kristie and Matthew Payment.


Literacy Tip of the Month for March

What is Fluency?

Fluency is the ability to read smoothly and automatically, with expression and attention to punctuation.

Pace= the speed in which you read

  • the goal is to read at a “just right” pace.
  • Reading not too fast and not too slow.

Phrasing=Chunking the words together into meaningful phrases

  • Reading in phrases and not reading words one. word. at. a.time.

Intonation (Expression)=Reading with feeling in your voice

  • Changing your voice to match a character.
  • Reading link you would speak (and not like a robot!).
  • Moving your voice up and down.

Punctuation= Reading with attention to punctuation.

  • Stopping at periods…
  • Taking breaths at commas ,,,
  • Making your voice go up for question marks ???
  • Showing excitement for exclamation points !!!
  • Using “quotation marks” to change voice for characters.

 


Liberty-Benton High School Students of the Month of January

Alyssa CornwellSenior Alyssa Cornwell is active in National Honor Society and cosmetology at Millstream. Her favorite class is government. She enjoys interior design of houses and going to church. She is looking forward to graduating and earning her cosmetology license. Her personal goal is to be a great wife and someday a great mom. Alyssa is the daughter of Kim and James Cornwell.

 

 

Tatum Teeple

Junior Tatum Teeple enjoys art, singing, fashion, and blogging. Her favorite class is chemistry. She is active in track, National
Honor Society, Hancock Youth Leadership, and is a STRIDES leader. She is looking forward to college, and her personal goal is to be admitted into the occupational therapy program. Tatum is the daughter of Darin and Kerry Teeple.

 

 

Clarissa RamirezSophomore Clarissa Ramirez enjoys drawing and reading. Her favorite classes are art, Spanish, and geometry. She is active in Spanish Club and helping with basketball concessions. She is looking forward to getting into National Honor Society next year, and her personal goal is to be the best she can be. Clarissa is the daughter of Sue and Jupiter Ramirez.

 

 

Audrey HarringtonFreshman Audrey Harrington is active in track and envirothon. She enjoys babysitting and spending time with friends. Her favorite classes are Spanish and American Sign Language. She is looking forward to making the most of her high school experience. Her personal goal is to continue to get good grades. Audrey is the daughter of Shelly and Martin Harrington.

LB Wins Hancock County Quiz Bowl Tournament

Congratulations to the High School Quiz Bowl team for an excellent Hancock County season. The team finished 2nd to Riverdale in the league and won the tournament championship against Riverdale on January 20th with an exciting 3rd round double tie breaker win. The team finished the evening 4-0. Team members are: Jeb Bishop, Jordan Clagg, Alex Doone, Jenny Fleck, Andrew Grimm, Kyle Hohman, Megann Hohman, Thomas Koizumi, and Andrew Weadock. The team will begin competition  in Hardin County on February 1st.

Liberty-Benton Middle School Spelling Bee

The top 17 spellers in the middle school qualified to compete in our school wide spelling bee on January 6th. It was an exciting bee! Our student body did an excellent job of following the audience rules of etiquette during the competition while also cheering on our contestants at appropriate times during the bee.

After seven intense rounds, eighth grader Avery Ayers defeated the other spellers to become our school champion. Runner up was eighth grader Amanda Tremains; our third place contestant was seventh grader Jaemacyn Morgan.

Our school champion, Avery Ayers, will go on to represent Liberty-Benton Middle School in the county wide spelling bee at Glenwood Middle School on February 4, 2016, at 7:00 pm. The top seven spellers from the Hancock County Spelling Bee will move on to the Blade Spelling Bee on March 12, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Owens Community College Performing Arts Center in Toledo, Ohio.


Free Preschool Screening Offered

A developmental screening for 3, 4, and 5 year-old children for whom there may be concerns in the areas of gross or fine motor skills, speech-language or readiness is set for Friday, April 15, 2016. In addition, a vision and hearing screening will be offered. This is a free service to the public.

The Preschool Screening is for students in the following school districts: Arcadia, Arlington, Cory Rawson, Liberty-Benton, McComb, Riverdale, Van Buren, and Vanlue.

Pre-Registration is required. For a screening appointment, please call 419.422.7525, ext. 209. Please call between the dates of March 21, 2016 and April 8, 2016. A confirmation will be mailed to you. Screening will be held at Findlay First Nazarene Church, which is located at 2501 Broad Avenue in Findlay.  Early registration is recommended as sessions are limited.

Preschool Screening is conducted by the Hancock County Educational Service Center.
