Dr. Larry Cook Appointed Interim Superintendent

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Larry Cook as the interim superintendent for Liberty-Benton Local Schools. His post will begin January 1 immediately following the retirement of Jim Kanable at the end of the year. We are confident in his ability to lead our district and help bridge the transition of this key administrative position.  

The search for our next superintendent continues.  Thanks to everyone who responded to the superintendent questionnaire.  We are working hard to find a replacement that meets the needs of our entire community including staff, students, parents and district residents.  The target timeline to complete the search is February, 2017.

About Dr. Larry Cook
Larry Cook is originally from Vanlue and holds a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Toledo.  He has served in various administration capacities including the superintendent for Tiffin City Schools and Van Buren Local Schools along with related positions both academic and administrative for Ashland University, University of Findlay and North Central Ohio Educational Service Center.  

Cook is a graduate of Vanlue High School.  He is a published author and has held many advisory and board positions throughout his career.  He currently serves on the Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA); Editorial Board for American Secondary Education; and Facilitator for Strategic Planning for AASA – The School Superintendents Association.

Senior Ethan Frankart is active in basketball, student council, yearbook, track, Welcome Crew, Bible study, Habitudes, National Honor Society, and is a STRIDES leader. He attended Buckeye Boys State, served as co-leader of the student section for football, and is a graduate of Hancock Youth Leadership. He enjoys hanging out with his friends as much as possible and adventuring to new places. His favorite class is any math class! He is looking forward to going to college and pursuing his future career, and his personal goals are to live a successful life and create a positive environment around him. Ethan is the son of Brenda Frankart and Mark Frankart.

Junior Carson Garlock is active in National Honor Society, STRIDES, soccer and FCA, and her favorite class is any math class. She is looking forward to becoming an aunt, and she enjoys hanging out with friends and family, doing puzzles, and playing games: cards, Dutch blitz, and sequence. Her personal goal is to become more outgoing throughout her high school career. Carson is the daughter of Scott and Angie Garlock.

Sophomore Abby Reynolds attends St. Michael’s youth group, and she is active in volleyball, basketball, Z-Club, Habitudes, and FCA. Her favorite class is math, and she is looking forward to the holidays and enjoying her high school years. Her personal goal is to achieve good grades throughout high school. Abby is the daughter of Kay and Norm Reynolds.

Freshman Michael Erdeljac enjoys fishing and spending time with friends. His favorite classes are math and science, and he is active in basketball, football, and baseball. He is looking forward to getting his first job, and his personal goal is to graduate from high school with at least a 3.3 GPA. Michael is the son of John and Kelly Erdeljac.

sarnold-jpg-1Mr. Scott Arnold is in his 13th year of teaching at Liberty-Benton High School.  He earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Bowling Green State University, and his hometown is Cairo, Ohio.  Scott and his wife, Carrie, also a teacher at Liberty-Benton, have three children: Camden, a sophomore; Connor, a fifth grader; and Cooper, 4.

Scott enjoys the interaction with students and relationships that continue after students leave Liberty-Benton High School.  He enjoys cooking, running, and family time, and he is looking forward to traveling various parts of the country and world with his family.

LB Offers New Basic Manufacturing Class

Students at Liberty-Benton High School have an exciting new opportunity to explore careers in the manufacturing industry. Recently, the school was awarded a state of Ohio Straight A Fund grant to offer a basic manufacturing class. In partnership with Rhodes State College and the West Central Ohio Manufacturing Consortium (WCOMC), students can earn the WCOMC’s Basic Manufacturing Credential, two college credit hours and an integrated systems certificate from Rhodes, and receive a WorkKeys assessment score. Throughout the school year, students will be touring area manufacturing facilities and have opportunities to apply for local internships.

The manufacturing class allows students to explore post-high school career options they may have never considered and provides them with skills that are immediately transferrable to the workforce. Taught by vocational agriculture teacher, Mr. Jeff Blakely, concepts such as manufacturing process, mathematics, workplace safety, teamwork, effective communication techniques, as well as the importance of punctuality and attendance are emphasized in this course. Potential employers benefit by being able to interact with the students prior to an employment offer and can observe that these students demonstrate the skills necessary for career success.

Whether students pursue a college degree or enter the workforce upon graduation, elements of the basic manufacturing class expose them to different types of jobs available in the manufacturing industry, ultimately helping them determine career path options. Hancock County’s low jobless rate, expanding manufacturing community, as well as an increasing need for skilled workers make the basic manufacturing class a timely addition to the school’s curriculum.

Spanish Class Celebrates El Día de los Muertos

This year we have six seniors in the Spanish V class. A typical day starts with news articles that are written and presented in Spanish. We have a group discussion where we share our opinions about the articles. We also have a word of the day. Comida y conversación (food and conversation), culture, and Spanish games are some of our favorite things to do in Spanish class. Every week, we write a journal entry in Spanish based on a given prompt.

Through our studies of the representative cultures, we learned about El Día de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead. It is celebrated from October 31 through November 2 to commemorate the family members who have passed away. To celebrate this holiday, we decorated cardboard skulls and read Aztec poetry relating to the theme. We decorated a showcase with Day of the Dead artwork made by Spanish students. The main attraction of the display was our cardboard skulls, which were part of a contest. Students and teachers were encouraged to vote for their favorite.

Rhodes State College Public Speaking Class

The Rhodes State College public speaking class recently presented demonstrative (how to) speeches.  The students got to choose their topics and spent a few weeks researching and preparing them.  Preparation varied from watching videos on good demonstrative speeches, videotaping themselves, and giving their speech to classmates and friends.  When final preparations were done, we had quite a range of topics: preparing Halloween snacks, how to train your dog, how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, how to hurdle, how to do card tricks, how to save an infant from choking, and how to kick a soccer ball (among others).  The demonstrators involved the class, and we were able to learn how to properly celebrate a touchdown and decorate cakes as well.  I am extremely proud of all the hard work the students have put into this class and speeches so far, and I look forward to their impromptu speeches next.

LB Hosts Grandparents Day

More than 800 guests visited Liberty-Benton Elementary and Junior High Schools on Monday, November 7 for grandparents day.  Grandparents were able to eat lunch with their grandchild(ren) and participate in classroom activities.  The day is organized through PTO volunteers who did a terrific job facilitating this day for all of our special guests.
