The MobyMax App is a Great Learning Tool

“I keep my students iPads at their fingertips all day. My students use them at some point in every subject,” states Mrs. Bonnie Orians, Second grade teacher at Liberty-Benton Elementary. “Our reading series is on the iPads, the students work on an app to help them with their math facts, and we use an app to study our weekly spelling words,” Mrs. Orians Says.

MobyMax is one app that Mrs. Orian’s class utilizes everyday; in class and at home. This app allows her to differentiate her classroom. The idea behind MobyMax is to leverage scientific data to create an adaptive learning tool set that helps students and teachers identify missing skill sets and uses progress monitoring to automatically assign effective lessons. MobyMax contain curriculum for reading, writing, math, social studies, and science.

“I like MobyMax because the students take a placement test and the app will then assign the materials according to the student’s placement results. They can work at their own pace and it tracks their progress through the lessons,” states Mrs. Orians. Students earn badges and they can turn in those badges for time to play learning games. “I find that all my students work hard to earn their badges, it’s a win-win for my class,” exclaims Mrs. Orians. “My students love MobyMax and I am seeing great results!”

Liberty-Benton Receives Grant

The Hancock County Community Partnership is pleased to announce that Liberty-Benton Local Schools, along with McComb Local Schools, have both received a $1000 grant award to support school-based drug-free activities. These grant awards were part of the recent training held by the Community Partnership that focused on the Lifestyle Risk Reduction Model of Prevention. Nearly 50 community members attended this event.

The Lifestyle Risk Reduction Model is a prevention model developed in the hopes of keeping people of all ages from experiencing alcohol and drug related health problems throughout their lifetime. The Lifestyle Risk Reduction Model defines prevention as a comprehensive and systematic effort to reduce the risk that an individual of any age who does not already have alcoholism or other drug addiction will experience alcohol-or drug-related health or impairment problems at any point in life.

The Lifestyle Risk Reduction Model focuses on the reduction of health and impairment problems related to alcohol and drug use and promotes abstinence by addressing the following three behavioral goals:

  1. Increase abstinence;
  2. Delay onset of use;
  3. Reduce high-risk use.

The Lifestyle Risk Reduction Model includes five principles:

  1. Each person has a biological risk for developing a health problem;
  2. Lifestyle choices also present risk for developing a health problem;
  3. The level of biological risk determines how much and how often is high risk;
  4. The only thing necessary to produce the health problem is for the level of high-risk choices to equal or surpass the level of biological risk; and
  5. Social and psychological factors play an important role in the development of lifestyle-related health problems by influencing the quantity and/or frequency of choices.

The STRIDES program will use the $1000 grant for their various activities. The STRIDES program involves all students and staff in a leadership and service program, “Students Taking Roles In Developing Educational Success.” STRIDES promotes positive choices, teamwork, spreading kindness, leadership development, and making a positive difference in the community and world around us by participating in various service projects.
